EXIT STATE: @ Relentless Garage Review By Ollie Thomas

Exit State
Relentless Garage, London.
24/11/11

It’s a cold evening on November 24th. North London, and nearing 10 o’clock, Exit State prepare to take the stage. The crowd is sparse, with many never having seen the band before. It’s a slightly unconventional set-up tonight, with the headlining band, Four Wheel Drive, having already performed when Exit State step up to the plate, ready to blow everyone away.

This show being the debut of lead guitarist Matt Harris, with a hometown show next weekend before they’re off to Hard Rock Hell it is definitely a baptism in fire. However, he fits in effortlessly with the band, looking as if he’s been there since day one as Exit State power their way through a blisteringly catchy 45 minute set that just seems to fly by as frontman, Roy Bright, engages and interacts with the crowd despite the tiny size.

The band tackle songs from both debut album “Death of a Rockstar”, and latest effort “Black Veins”. The particular crowd-pleasers of this explosive set being “Bad Days”, and Kerrang! Request Show chart-topper, and set-closer, “Lost Beyond Belief”.

Exit State are definitely something the current scene of emerging British artists is missing, harking back to the older, rockier days. A breath of fresh air for those tired of post-hardcore, blast beats, and endless breakdowns. Along with label-mates Fury UK, they are bringing true rock back to the UK where it belongs.

If you’re going to Hard Rock Hell, or even if they’re just in your local area, check them out. You’re in for a treat.
